Hockey East announced its preseason rankings yesterday at the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston. UMass-Amherst finished in a tie for fifth place with Vermont.

  • Boston College (5) 84
  • New Hampshire (5) 84
  • Boston University 77
  • Maine 61
  • Massachusetts 54
  • Vermont 54
  • Northeastern 43
  • Providence 39
  • UMass Lowell 25
  • Merrimack 19

Here’s the official release, and here is the release from UMassAthletics.

The release from UMass says the Maroon and White will be on television seven times this upcoming season:

UMass’ first television game of the season will be at Providence on Oct. 26 on COX-TV. Two games at the Mullins Center will be televised: vs. New Hampshire on Jan. 11 (NESN) and vs. Boston University on March 1 (CN8). When the Minutemen head north to Maine on Feb. 24, the nation will be able to watch as ESPNU will carry the game.

Steve Games, a reporter for the UMass Daily Collegian, had an article about the women’s soccer team and its fantastic undefeated start.

It’s good to see the team playing well again. Here’s the article.

Looks like Coach Jim Rudy, who won his 300th game this year, has a positive outlook on the rest of the year:

“I mean, certainly we want to get to the A-10 tournament. We haven’t been there in the last few years, although we have had a team that’s been good enough to get there,” Rudy said before the season started. “The long shot of making the NCAA tournament is part of our journey back to respectability.”

Devin Hill, who was supposed to visit Bradley this weekend, is apparently going to DePaul.

“It was real comfortable when I got (to DePaul),” said Hill, rated a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and a two-star prospect by Scout.com. “The other visits, it really felt like it was forced.”
