It’s amazing how the passion of athletics transfers to the daunting realities of life.
Mike Connors, a reporter with the Massachusetts Daily Collegian, wrote an article about Jaclyn Murphy, a 12-year-old girl suffering from cancer, and how she is now a member of the UMass field hockey team.
From UMass assistant coach Kelly Dostal:
“We complain on a daily basis about class and not being able to sleep late,” she said. “This is a really nice perspective check.”
This is a very good article and it’s a bit of a tear-jerker. I’ll let Connors tell the whole story — he did a good job with this.

While virtually thumbing through The Collegian, I also found an interesting article about Jim Rudy, the longtime women’s soccer coach, and his recruiting process with the South Coast Scorpions.
Rudy, who recently won his 300th game, has been recruiting from this team and found Sydney Stoll, Kelsey Anderson, Alyssa Visconti — all current Minutewomen.
From coach:
“It’s one thing to recruit good kids, but we recruited good players, as well,” he said. “You can get great players in a lot of places, but the questions [are], ‘What is their upbringing, What are their parents like, and What is the coaching they have received?’
Check out the article.

The lacrosse teams from UMass and Springfield College are scrimmaging to collect cans for the less fortunate. The two teams will face off Oct. 6 at East Longmeadow High School.
Here’s some more info.
