Solid win for UMass

September 17, 2007

Well, UMass put together a full game, capitalized on the big plays and very much put Towson in its place.

It’s about time.

The UMass defense has let up less and less points through each game — 30, 17, 13 — and will have another tall order in a Black Bears squad that just lost a 24-17 overtime heartbreaker to Villanova. You can bet that Maine is not going to take a potential three-game losing streak lightly.

Also, Liam Coen and J.J. Moore will be featured on “NCAA On Campus,” Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 12:30 p.m. on ESPN Classic. I wish I got the channel — I’m sure it will be as funny as Jeff Viggiano’s fake “Cribs” episode from a few years back.

However, I’m sure it won’t hold a flame to this.

It looks like the University of Albany is looking for some state money for a new football stadium — $60 million to be exact.

While this doesn’t directly affect UMass, it shows another Northeast school tying to make advancements to its football facilities. The article also mentions UMass.

From Great Danes football coach Bob Ford:

I think (UAlbany) football, sometime during my lifetime, will probably be at the level with UMass, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, a major state university playing scholarship football on that level somewhere in the future,” Ford said.

First things first — make sure you have a decent longsnapper before you play UMass again.

Sorry, I had to.

The Springfield Republican had a good article on Doug Clark, a UMass alumnus that plays AAA baseball for the Richmond Braves.

He was named the team’s MVP.

Check out the article here.

Sort of random, but this article about the Plymouth State Football team mentions Don Brown, UMass’ head football coach, and how he led the Panthers to some of their best seasons:

The real glory years, considering the level of competition, probably came under Don Brown, the current UMass coach, in the early to mid 1990s which included back-to-back NCAA Division III playoff berths in ‘94 and ‘95. It would be the last time Plymouth would sniff an NCAA bid.
